Another small select group of five Old Salopian golfers went to Alwoodley Golf Club last Thursday to do battle on this Yorkshire course designed by the great Dr Alister MacKenzie. This famed architect left a legacy of classic courses around the world – among them Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. However, Alwoodley was the first course he designed and is therefore known as the Original MacKenzie.
Alwoodley is currently ranked 37th in the UK Top 100 Courses and it has just hosted the Brabazon Trophy in May/June this year – the course, as a result, was in great condition this summer.
Peter Ambler, OS & Alwoodley Member had arranged our visit and we were also joined by local members, Geoff Thomas and Neil Crawford – who is a recent Past Captain of Alwoodley.
We played a “Five Ball Skins Match” with various Spot Prizes along the way. We saw Alwoodley at it’s best despite some wind and drizzle – which was also disrupting the Test Match at Headingly near-by that morning.
An overseas Alwoodley member, Bernie Dailey, from Georgia, USA caught us up playing on his own and in true Salopian spirit we asked him to join us – so we ended up playing a six ball match which we completed in three and three quarter hours – playing ready golf under the recently revised R&A rules – no Slow play in OSGS Golf unlike the current PGA Tour!!!
Post the Golf we had a delicious two course lunch in the Alwoodley dinning-room and the prizes were presented to the winners:
Overall Winner with 9 Skins – Frank Higham
Nearest the Pin on 7thHole – Frank Higham
Nearest the Pin on 9thHole – Bernie Dailey
Nearest the Pin on 11thHole – Bernie Dailey
Longest Drive on 13thHole – Charles Hill
Nearest the Pin on 14thHole – Neil Crawford
Rest assured we also gave both Geoff Thomas and and Peter Ambler a small prize too – so they didn’t feel left out after a great fun day of Salopian golf.
Many thanks to Peter Ambler for organizing this fixture and the catering at an advantageous rate at this fixture. We don’t plan to hold this Fixture next year as we seem to struggle to get OS golfers out for this fixture but we will come back to Yorkshire again in the future.
