A glorious summer’s day of golf was enjoyed by Simon Cullingworth, Frank Higham, Stephen Shaw, Peter Thwaites and Charles Hill yesterday at Worplesdon Golf Club. The early morning dew disappeared to reveal bright blue skies and hot sunshine. The course was in great condition.
We met early for crispy Bacon rolls and steaming coffee before Stephen drew the ballot for who was to play with whom.
Frank and Simon led off as a two ball with Charles, Peter and Stephen following on behind. We played an individual stableford competiton from the yellow tees. We all got round in three hours which was good going. Frank won the nearest the pin competition on the signature 10thhole with a magnificent shot to 3 feet over Bridley Pool. Peter won the longest drive flying past Simon by thirty yards on the 18thhole.
Pictured below are Stephen Shaw and Peter Thwaites, in front of the 8thGreen and with the fairway of the 9thhole behind them.
At the end of the morning round we all enjoyed a drink on the terrace in front of the clubhouse and the results were announced:
3rd Place = with 32 Points each – Simon Cullingworth & Charles Hill
2ndPlace with 33 Points – Peter Thwaites
1stPlace with 37 Points – Frank Higham – presented with the The Duerr Salver.

A magnificent Lunch of Prawns & Smoked Salon, Steak & Chips followed by Treacle Tart & Ice Cream washed down with the Club Claret was enjoyed by all of us.
Post Lunch we had a fun 12 Hole Foursomes Match with the Left Handers – Peter & Simon against the Right Handers – Charles & Frank. There were a number of “post lunch shots” to start with but our golf got better as the afternoon progressed! The result was an honorable tie.
Pictured L to R are Charles Hill, Simon Cullingworth, Peter Thwaites and Frank Higham standing beside the Green of the Par 3 Signature 10th hole with Bridley Pool in the background.
After the Foursomes we enjoyed lashings of Ginger Beer on the terrace again in the evening sunshine before we made our way home for the weekend with families.
Hopefully, next year more OSGS Members will turn our for this fixture, as it would be sad to lose the opportunity to play this classic Surrey heathland course with the heather bursting into bloom. The Lunch itself is almost worth the visit alone with the menu we enjoyed.
All that remains is to thank Simon for hosting us in his new capacity as a Country Member and to thank Full Member, Jo Russell, for organising our day out at Worplesdon this year.
Charles Hill, Hon Sec.
