OSGS Visit to Royal Liverpool Golf Club on Wednesday 20 October 2021

The OSGS visited RLGC at Hoylake to play our Covid Delayed 2021 Fixture from the Spring when we were still in Lockdown.

Despite a dreadful weather forecast 26 Old Salopians turned up to play golf at this magnificent Open Championship Course. The Course is preparing to once again host the The Open in 2023 and there have been some changes to the course since we last played here. There is a new 15th Par 3 hole which we all found very challenging.

However, the weather was somewhat more challenging and many of the older Salopians present felt they had been through another “Basic Year Experience”.  I have never, personally, played in such torrential rain and wind – this said everyone persevered and laughed about the weather it was so bad. Whilst, all the golfers survived a number of brollies disintegrated in the wind!

Post the Golf we sat down in the dining-room for a delicious two course supper and prizes were awarded to the winners as follows:

Ladies Prize to Claire Painter (wife of the OSGS President)

Nearest the Pin in 3 shots on the Par 5 3rd Hole – Richard Hanson

Longest Drive on the 13th Hole – Charles Hill

Nearest the Pin on the 15th Hole – Charles Hill

Division Tw0 – Handicap Index of 12 or greater

Second Prize with 36 Points – Will Briggs

First Prize with 38 Points – Harry Fildes

Division One Handicap Index of 11.9 or less

Second Prize with 30 Points – Jonathan Mitchell

First Prize with 37 Points – Charles Hill

The OSGS President, Will Painter, rounded up the afternoon with a vote of thanks to all for coming, particularly some newer and younger members of the OSGS, our RLGC Hosts and a vote of thanks again to the immediate Past President, Anthony Smith, for his outstanding leadership of the OSGS as our President for the last ten years.

Next year we are planning to play this fixture on Friday 8 April 2022. so put this date indoor diary now.

Charles Hill, Hon Sec.
