OSGS V The Schools’ at Hawkstone Park, Shropshire on Sunday 13 October 2019

Twelve Old Salopian Golfers arrived on a rather wet and overcast Sunday morning to take on a team from The School’s.

Bacon & sausage baguettes washed down with tea and coffee got us underway before we set out to tackle the Hawkstone Course. We followed round a group of Staffordshire Ladies playing in three balls – The Hon Sec found one of their stray balls in the Water at The Moat on the 12th Hole – Thank you!

We played Canadian Foursomes where everyone drives, you play your partner’s ball for the second shot and then choose which ball to play for the third shot

Gerald Smith, local Hawkstone Member and Organiser of this Fixture – Many thanks Gerald! led off the Old Salopians playing with the Hon Sec against Will Austen off 7 and Dr Paul Pattenden. This was a very closely fought match that finally ended with the last putt on the 18th Green where The School’s were victorious.

Dan Legge, former Captain of School Golf in 2014, now working as a Graduate Surveyor in London partnered Peter Stewart and they had a tremendous victory in the country against The Schools pair of Egor Simarov and Archie Eyre.

The third OS pair of Chris Conway & John Upton also had another good win in the country over Shelden Yuen and Nick Argyle.

Our fourth pair of The President, Anthony Smith, and David Moorhouse – who had made the trip all the way from Fulham in London! lost 4&3 to the Captain of School Golf, Sam Austen and Dr Tim Foulger.

Our fifth pair of Dan Evans and James Onions lost 1 down to Mr Mark Schofield, Master i/c of Golf playing with his son Daniel – who I’m told hit his drives a country mile off 26!

Our sixth pair of Ainsley Reid and Rod Spiby had a serious loss out in the country to Hugo Hulse and Simeon Wainwright.

Post the golf we all sat down for a two-course supper in the Hawkstone Hotel and all those who had won their respective matches won a sleeve of balls as a prize. The overall result the Match was the same as last year with a Draw. A vote of thanks was given by the President.

Next year we are hoping to play this Match on Sunday 3 May 2020 – a date for your diary perhaps?
