OSGS V OSFC at Huntercombe Golf Club on Sunday 8th May 2022

On a glorious, hot and sunny afternoon 17 Old Salopians gathered at Huntercombre Golf Club to play the Annual Foursomes Match between the OSGS & the OSFC. The OSGS has only won this trophy once in the four years we have played this match and that was last year – so I was keen as, Hon Sec to retain the Trophy.

It was slightly disappointing that only 6 OSGS players signed up for this match. The OSGS borrowed two of its members from the OSFC, Will Briggs & Raff McKenzie, to bolster our numbers. The Hon Sec signed up and brought his wife, Jane, to play on the OSGS side – very accommodating of her as it was our 29th Wedding Anniversary too!!!

After Coffee and Bacon Rolls we set out – James Butler, member at Huntercombe, took on Lewis Brown in a singles match and prevailed bringing the first point to the OSGS.

In the first foursomes match Peter Worth, member at Huntercombe, and Nick Renton halved their match with John Owen and Marcus Morris-Eyton.

In the second foursomes match the President, Will Painter and new OSGS member, Nick De Lisle, lost to Rory Gittens and new OSGS member – Will Moorcroft playing for the footballers.

Charles Hill and Jane Hill had a very competitive match with brothers Henry and Alex Gittens, played in great spirits, with the match being close all the way round. The Hon Sec failed to hole his putt on the 18th and the OSFC won 1 up!

The final match between Raff and Will against Rich McGarry, Capt of the OSFC, and Charlie Pilkington was also a halved match.

The Final result was therefore OSFC 3 OSGS 2.

Tea and sadwiches and a few beers were eaten and drunk on the terrace where prizes were awarded and the trophy handed over to Richard McGarry of the OSFC.

Our thanks to our Huntercombe members for hosting us and the staff at Huntercombe for looking after us so well. We will be back next year – the photo below shows Richard proudly holding his trophy with fellow competitors enjoying tea on the terrace.
