OSGS Celebration Meeting 40+2 Anniversary 1980 Halford Hewitt Victory at Walton Heath Golf Club

Last Tuesday 10 May 2022, 23 salopians gathered for this special celebration meeting at Walton Heath. This included all the living members of the 1980 Team: Anthony Smith, Michael Brabner, Will Painter, Nick Wase-Rogers, Allan Wright and Jonathon Mawdsley – all playing golf plus Peter Broad and Anthony Parsons who joined us for lunch.

We played singles golf in 3/4 balls in the morning on the Old Course, assisted by Peter Renshaw, local Walton Heath member, who helped to host the day and was our offical starter. We played a stableforsd competition in two divisions with the following results:

Nearest the Pin in 2 on 3rd hole – Peter Thwiates

Nearest to the pin on 7th hole – Charles Waud – Guest & Owner of our website and member at Walton.

Nearest to the Pin in 2 on 11th hole – Simon Jenkins

Longest Drive on 14th Hole – Nick Renton

Division 2 Handicap Index over 10.1

3rd place with 33 pts – Michael Brabner

2nd Place with 36 pts – Luke Gerrard

1st place with 38 pts – Peter Thwaites

Division 1 Handicap Index Under 10

3rd place with 35 pts – Charles Waud

2nd Place with 37 pts – Frank Higham

1st place with 38 pts – James Dickson

We were treated to a fantastic Walton Heath Carvery Lunch in the Fowler Room, Herbert Fowler was one of the course architects, along with James Braid.

During lunch past OSGS President and 1980 Victory Captain, Anthony Smith, told the story of the 1980 victory to everybody which we all enjoyed followed by a vote of thanks from current OSGS President, Will Painter.

Post Lunch 18 people played 12 holes of foursomes on the New Course – see some of the starters on the first tee of the New Course. Post the golf we had a late tea in the clubhouse and the following prizes were awarded:

3rd place with 24 Pts and a Back 3 of 6 were Peter Renshaw & Charles Hill

2nd place with 24 Pts and a Back 3 of 7 were Luke Gerrard & Chris Spedding

Foursome Winners with 28 Pts Nick Renton & Will Mackenzie.

This was a fantastic celebration of Old Salopian Golf!
