OSGS April 2021 Update and Retirement of OSGS President Anthony Smith

Dear OSGS Members,

Following the return to golf I thought I would update you on the following:

I have re-jigged the 2021 Fasti and moved a number of Meetings to take account of Covid. The Spring Meetings have become Autumn Meetings at Denham on 23/09/21 and Hoylake on 20/10/21.

Sadly, once again I have had to postpone the Halford Hewitt Victory 40 Years Celebration planned for Walton Heath until 10/05/22.

Please look at the Fasti on the website for details of all our fixtures. I will endeavour to make Meetings available for booking via the website at least 8 weeks before an event takes place.

I am hoping that our first event in the Fasti – the match between the OSGS against the OSFC will take place at Huntercombe GC, Oxfordshire on Sunday 2 May 2021. I am still awaiting confirmation from the Secretary at Huntercombe that they are happy to host this event.

This is a Foursomes Match with a likely arrival time of Midday with coffee/bacon roll, 18 Holes Foursomes then sandwiches and chips post the golf served in a marquee outside. The costs will be £50 per member (£25 to those under 30yrs).

If you are interested in playing in this match please email me with your current handicap mailto: charlesgchill@hotmail.com to let me know. (I am not taking bookings on the website for this match on the website in case it does not go ahead.)

Our President, Anthony Smith (Ingrams 1954-59), has decided to retire after ten years at the helm of the OSGS on 1 June 2021. During this period, he has provided unstinting support to the OSGS, me and my predecessor, Tim Lewis. He and his wife, Pauline, have supported the Scottish Tour for many years. I am sure you would all like me to thank Anthony for all his efforts and hard work during his tenure as our President.

I think it would be fitting to formally celebrate Anthony’s retirement as President at our AGM and 60th Meeting at Trentham on Sunday 3 October 2021 where we will play for the Eustace Storey Putter, one of the oldest OSGS Trophies.

Please make a note of this date in your diary and more details will follow in due course.

I am delighted to announce that Will Painter (Riggs 1967-71) has agreed to take over from Anthony as our new President. Will has previously been a Captain of the OSGS, was the Hon Sec for 20 years before Tim Lewis and has represented the OSGS in both the Halford Hewitt & Mellin Salver. He has also been a Captain and County President in Worcestershire Golf.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our events later this year.

Best wishes

Charles Hill
