Following very heavy rain over the Friday and Saturday and despite a gloomy weather forecast, with potential for flooding, ten Old Salopians met to play in the 59th Meeting at Trentham in a break of the 2020 Covid Restrictions;
Winner of Storey Putter with a Gross 78: Julian Mitchell (off 15 handicap’ so he also had a net 63).
Runner-Up (on back nine) with 81: Simon Shepherd – winner in 2019
3rd (losing on back 9) 81: Will Painter.
Julian was best in both gross and net, but our President, Anthony Smith, ruled Julian could only win one trophy, and he elected to take the Eustace Storey Putter.
The President handed Julian’s card over to the 2020 Captain of Trentham, Simon Mellard, so that Trentham handicapping committee could take his handicap into consideration, but Simon handed it to brother Jonathan, who tried to do something with it, but eventually handed it back to Julian, so it may never see the light of day! Incidentally, Julian said it was comfortably the best round of golf he had EVER played, and certainly the first time he had broken 80 gross.
As a consequence, the winner of the Tommy Hall Cup was: Andrew Hulme, with a gross 87 off 17 net:70.
Runner-Up: Mr Captain (Simon Mellard) with an 84 off 13 net: 71.
Golf balls were given to the winners (2 sleeves each) and runners up (1 sleeve), and balls for 2’s were also given.
Many thanks to President Anthony Smith for this report above.
As OSGS Hon Sec I spoke to the Secretary at Trentham after receiving this report and everyone will be pleased to hear that I persuaded them that this was a Medal Round and Julian Mitchell has duly had his handicap significantly reduced – this should avoid him winning at Gullane for the fourth consecutive time in 2021 on the Scottish Tour!!!!
