On a sunny autumnal morning, the Salopian team gathered in the Clubhouse at Blackwell determined to retain the Tony Duerr Tankard.
In the morning foursomes matches, the top pair of James Taylor & James Shaw lost on the 18th green. Andy Pollock & James Skelton won 2&1. Will Painter & Simon Shepherd halved. James Pollock & Charles Stockbridge lost 3&2 after being well ahead at the turn. Angus Pollock & Rob Ainscow won 4&3.
With the match all square, the two teams enjoyed a socially distanced lunch. Suitably refreshed for the afternoon fourball matches, the pairings of Taylor & Painter and Skelton & Ainscow won easily but the other three matches were all won narrowly by Malvern.
Shortly before the trophy was presented to the winning Captain, it transpired that the Malvern team contained not only alumni from Malvern College but also Repton, Felsted and Bromsgrove! A victory for the coalition forces by a point.
Final result: Shrewsbury 4 1/2 : 5 1/2 Malvern.
Many thanks to Captain Angus Pollock for this report and photos of the day!
