Lightning strikes twice – Yet Another Shock Defeat for OSGS Against the OSFC

OS Footballers retained their unbeaten record in this second annual encounter with OSGS at Huntercombe on Sunday 28thApril 2019

(OS Footballers first):

Will Moorcroft (Walton Heath) & Will Briggs halved with Stephen Osborne and Nicky Renton (Royal Mid-Surrey).

Rory Gittins and Max Lilley (Wilmslow) beat William Bennett 2×1.

(Sadly William’s partner James Butler was unable to play).

Alex Gittins & John Owen halved with Tim Lewis & Philip Sabin.

The result: OS Footballers beat OS Golfers by 1 – 0, with two matches halved.

On arrival, it was noted that the footballers were on the practice ground.

Before golf, Tim Lewis welcomed all players to Huntercombe and appealed for birdies in order to embellish his report to the Salopian.

John Owen responded on the first green, holing a 18 footer putt for an opening 2.

Will Briggs, as last year, drove the 17thgreen to record with his partner, Will Moorcroft, a tap-in birdie 3.

It should also be chronicled that Max Lilley drove all the way from his home club at Wilmslow to take part in this match. Sadly, the new Hon Sec was unavailable to play (golfing in Atlanta, Georgia).

Finding nine fairways from his nine drives, the aged ex-Hon Sec was dubbed “the Metronome” by his young opponents Alex Gittins and John Owen. This pleased the old man’s ego so much that Tim Lewis (Rigg’s 1950-55) records the soubriquet for posterity.

The Cup was presented by Huntercombe member William Bennett who congratulated the winning Captain Will Briggs, on retaining the trophy.

The new Hon Sec, Charles Hill, is very grateful to his predecessor, Tim Lewis – now an Honorary Vive President of the OSGS – for this Report. It is hoped to play this fixture again in 2020 – hopefully the OS Golfers will prevail then – 3rdtime lucky!!!
